    Hi Community,

    I have a friend whose adult son has an ABI and is quite independent but has short-term memory loss and requires support with some daily living skills. She is looking for an organisation/agency that provides an 'on-call' type of service whereby a person with a disability can call a number and speak to a support worker 24 hours a day to provide them with advice or information. If the PwD requires a support worker to help them face-to-face, the organisation can arrange for a suport worker to be at the client's home within say 30-60 minutes. 

    If anyone knows of an organisation that currently provides this service, I'd be grateful to hear from you.

    Can anyone advise Alisha of a organisation that provides either 24/hr 'on call' support or advice for daily living skills or if needed, can attend in-person in the the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne?

    There is an organisation called ONCALL Group, it sounds about right but not sure. They do have partners all around Australia but I have no vision of how good they are.

    Hi Alisha. I hope this is not too general. TAC previously had a service line that was an on call service. Organisations were paid a flat fee and providers who took this service were required to send a worker out within 30 minutes of a call. It was a way of not requiring 24/7 support. 

    I did not see any providers who did this well (as in, actually allocated staff to be on call, therefor able to respond within 30 minutes). So, I would suggest if you look at providers who service TAC, they might have that service, but I suggest asking some follow up questions regarding how this is managed:

    • Are workers allocated to be on call each day?
    • What are their training requirements?
    • Do you service the whole area?
    • What happens if someone cannot respond within the required timeframe?

    There may be more!

    Thanks so much Mark and Nicole for your suggestions. My friend is a client of TAC and they provided her with a list of agencies registered with them that provide an on-call service. However, when my friend called each organisation, she was told that they do not provide this service. Hence me putting the question out to the community in the hope of narrowing down her ongoing search. I'm not sure if ONCALL was one of the organisations on the list but I will ask her tomorrow when I see her. I will share with the group any information she gives me that I think might be helpful.
