    Hi Everyone,

    Just curious what your process is regarding a participant not being home whilst a service is being provided.

    When we provide Home and Garden Maintenance, the Support Worker is usually working outside and access to the home is not required, however we ask our participants to always be there when the service is being performed.

    We have a Participant who is going to be away for 3-4 months for medical treatments, they have cancelled their Domestic Assistance for during this time, but wish for their Home and Garden Maintenance to continue.  I feel we shouldn't be doing this without the Participant there, but in the circumstances, I don't want them to go without whilst receiving medical treatment.

    How have you handled a situation like this?

    Hi NDP Community,

    Can anyone advise Sarah on how to deal with a situation when a participant is away for 3-4months and wishes for their Home and Garden Maintenance to continue?
    Should this service be provided without the participant being at home?

    It is a lawn maintenance service. There is no requirement for the home owner/tenant to be home while that service occurs.

    There could of course be specific reasons why your  organisation's Service Agreement stipulates the client is at home. Possibly for reasons such as the client having responsibility to ensure a pet is secured inside?

    Lawn mowing/garden maintenance services turn up at people's homes all the time without the home owner being present. I suggest this situation is no different for a person with a disability.

    I understand why this is tricky. 

    Anyone going in for medical treatment would need to outsource their home maintenance, because they would not be home, however in this instance it is always outsourced. Is the medical treatment disability related? Maybe that would be the justification. Otherwise, it might mean a call the LAC for advice, or the organisation makes a well-meaning decision about whether it is reasonable to proceed. The organisation doing the home maintenance will need to decide if it sits within the NDIS rules. It is tricky for others to advise on this one.

    The only way I would do it is do minimum maintenance eg lawns once a month for a cost that doesn't come out of the plan. Once home it would work like a spring clean to bring things back up to speed. This will take longer so things would balance out.
